Now Thank We All Our God

November 25, 2015

martin_rinckartSunday at Bowman we had the privilege of singing “Now Thank We All Our God.” Ora asked if I would give an introduction to the hymn. As usual I was foggy on some of the details. It was written in the 17th century during the Thirty Years War and not the 16th. I was way off on the number of funerals Rinkart, the hymn’s author, had to facilitate. Instead of  40 to 50 funerals for the year, he did 40 to 50 funerals a day. In 1637 he did 4,480 funerals, including his wife’s. Here is a more complete description of the circumstances surrounding the hymn.
