That’s Not Fair! Pt.2

February 5, 2014

This is a followup to yesterday’s post. It was about the fact than Achan and his entire family were killed for his sin.

There is another story in the Bible that illustrates the same principle we see in play with Achan. Actually, there are many similar stories in the Bible. However, the narrative that I’d like to highlight is the story of Rahab. Because Rahab hid the Hebrew spies when they reconnoitered Jericho she was to be spared when the city was destroyed by the Children of Israel. This again makes sense to us. Here is where the same principle is at play: “So the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. And they brought all her relatives and put them outside the camp of Israel” (Josh 6:23). This is the very same principle that was at work with Achan. The difference is that Rahab brought life to her family while Achan brought death. We understand that Rahab was spared. She protected the spies. But her entire family?

In both stories the behavior of one brought life or death to his or her family. You see, it isn’t what we do but whom we are connected to. I will tease this out tomorrow.
