That’s Not Fair! Pt. 1

Achan Stoned

Probably for all of us there are Old Testament stories that trouble us. Because of cultural differences or simply because we don’t fully understand God’s ways, they just seem out of character. The story of Achan is one such story. It makes sense to us that Achan would be put to death for his sin. The part of the story that isn’t satisfying is that Achan’s “sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent all that he had” (Josh 7:24) were burned and stoned (Josh 7:25). Achan deserved this awful treatment but it just doesn’t seem right or fair that his children experienced the same punishment that he did. Achan’s children, to say nothing about  his livestock , had  absolutely nothing to do with Achan’s sin. So, why were they killed along with their dad?

For the next two or three days I will continue to deal with the principle illustrated by Achan and the death of his family.
