Books

June 1, 2013

One of my many fatal flaws is books. I’ve always said they are like drugs. You can take a trip and never leave the farm.

Here is a short piece by Joe Thorn about how to read profitably. He leans heavily on Henry Scudder who wrote a pretty good book on the Christian’s walk several centuries ago.

I mentioned earlier in the week that John Piper has a new free ebook on C. S. Lewis entitled Alive to the Wonder. The introduction discussing several aspects of Lewis’ thinking alone makes the book worth downloading.

The first systematic theology I had to purchase at what is now Liberty University was Lewis Berkhof’s Systematic Theology. It is a book I will still reference on occasion. Now, I recognize that most of us prefer our theology with lots of milk and sugar, but for those who like their theology black, it is hard to beat Berkhof. The good news: it is now a free download. Note: for those of you with a Kindle the epub format can easily be converted to Kindle format. Google it.

Finally, Matt Chandler’s Explicit Gospel is the free book from Christian Audio. This is the book Bowman has purchased for their graduates the past several years. Now I’ve got to come up with the time to listen to it.
