Love the sinner, hate the sin

October 12, 2011

We often say that we are to love the sinner and hate the sin. Don Carson in this post says not so fast. I think he’s right. Here’s a snippet:

Thus there is nothing intrinsically impossible about wrath and love being directed toward the same individual or people at the same time. God in his perfections must be wrathful against his rebel image-bearers, for they have offended him; God in his perfections must be loving toward his rebel image-bearers, for he is that kind of God.”

I think that, because we are finite beings and live the realm of cause and effect, we have a hard time “getting” this concept. I still get a cramp trying to wrap my head around the idea that God is not bound by our “either-or” way of thinking.

I agree. God is very different from us.
