Is Faith A Gift?

October 5, 2011

I remember having a conversation nearly 20 years ago about the “gift” of faith. The person I was conversing with argued that faith isn’t really a gift from God. This dear saint cited A. T. Robertson. Robertson points out that the word “faith” in Ephesians 2:8 is feminine while the word “this” of the “this is not your own doing” part of the verse is neuter. So the “this” can’t refer to faith. Robertson concludes, “‘Grace’ is God’s part, ‘faith’ ours.”

My view has always been that the gift of God refers to the whole salvation experience including the faith. Here William Mounce makes this point while interpreting Ephesians 2:8-9. Mounce literally wrote the book when it comes to translating Greek. Since no one understands or seeks God or does good (Romans 3:10-12) faith has to be something that God gives to us. Rejoice in His gift.
